The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has approved the release of ₦7 billion to clear 25% of the outstanding salary arrears owed to public primary school teachers in the FCT.
This announcement was made by the FCT Secretary for Education, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, during his visit to the headquarters of the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (FCT-UBEB) in Garki I District, Abuja.
Dr. Hayyo explained that the FCTA will cover 40% of the arrears, while the Area Councils are responsible for the remaining 60%. He added that the councils have been given three months to make the payments; otherwise, the funds would be deducted directly at the source and paid to the teachers.
According to him, the move is part of the administration’s efforts to resolve the teachers’ grievances and ensure they return to the classrooms without further delay.
Dr. Hayyo emphasized that FCT-UBEB remains a vital agency within the administration, dedicated to ensuring that every child of school age in the territory has access to quality education. He noted that with over 1,000 schools under its supervision, the Board still faces a shortage of teachers, a challenge that requires collective effort to address.
He explained that the purpose of his visit was to strengthen collaboration between the Education Secretariat and UBEB in fulfilling their shared goals.
In his remarks, Dr. Alhassan Sule, the Acting Executive Chairman of FCT-UBEB, highlighted some of the Board’s key achievements — including school renovations, training of quality assurance officers and teachers, distribution of sports equipment, and promotion of girl-child education through the establishment of Ako Girls’ Secondary School and other special schools.
Dr. Sule also announced that the Korea Model School emerged as the overall best school in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), reflecting the Board’s continued commitment to educational excellence.
