The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Department of Development Control approved a total of 1,860 building plans across Abuja in 2024.
This was revealed by the Director of the Department, Tpl. Mukhtar Usman Galadima, during the Annual Staff Get-Together and Award Night held at Zone 6, Wuse I District, Abuja.
According to Galadima, the Department received 2,135 building plan applications, out of which 1,860 were granted building permits. He further stated that the Department’s activities in 2024 generated 15,807 jobs, comprising 3,971 skilled (professional) positions, 5,124 semi-skilled (artisanal) roles, and 6,712 unskilled (labour) jobs.
In a bid to preserve the Abuja Master Plan, Galadima disclosed that over 20,432 shanties and illegal structures were demolished in collaboration with the Ministerial Joint Task Force. He added that the Department, working with sister agencies, also established a Post Development Audit and Building Insurance Committee to help prevent building collapses.
“These proactive measures were introduced to ensure the city’s sustainability, improve safety standards, and strengthen insurance compliance for both public and private buildings,” he explained.
The Director commended his staff for their dedication and professionalism, noting the Department’s commitment to continuous capacity building. He highlighted that the Department currently celebrates eight Ph.D. holders, with six more awaiting confirmation, and praised the growing participation of staff in professional bodies—an effort he said is enhancing their technical competence and adherence to global best practices.
Galadima expressed profound gratitude to the Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) and the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, for their visionary leadership and unwavering support for the Department.
