The National Universities Commission (NUC) has recently revealed a revised curriculum for Nigerian universities. Dr. Chris Maiyaki, the acting Executive Secretary of the commission, reiterated during a meeting with stakeholders that the implementation of this new curriculum is scheduled to commence in September 2023.
Content of the Story
He stressed that the newly introduced curriculum, referred to as CCMAS, will encompass 70 percent of the academic program, with each national universities retaining the authority to define the content of the remaining 30 percent. This move is considered a significant stride in influencing the trajectory of the education sector.
National Universities, this revamped curriculum heralds a significant transformation for universities in Nigeria. It officially introduces 17 distinct faculties or disciplines, including Administration and Management, Agriculture, Allied Health Sciences, Architecture, Arts, Basic Medical Sciences, Communications and Media Studies, Computing, Education, Engineering and Technology, Environmental Sciences, Law, Medicine and Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sciences, Social Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine.
Numerous notable modifications are ingrained in this curriculum overhaul. For instance, the field of Mass Communications has been disassembled to establish a dedicated discipline known as Communications, within the national universities.
This newly established field encompasses degree programs in areas such as Advertising, Broadcasting, Development Communication Studies, Film and Multimedia, Information and Media Studies, Journalism and Media Studies, Mass Communication, Public Relations, and Strategic Communication. Agriculture, on the other hand, has been subdivided into programs within its contributing components, which encompass B.Sc. degrees in Agricultural Economics, Animal Science, Crop Science, and Soil Science.
