Five Chadian nationals have been arrested for their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The FCT Police Commissioner, Olatunji Disu, made this known on Tuesday during a press briefing held after an expanded FCT Security Committee meeting in Life Camp, adding that the Police have launched an investigation into the case.
According to Abuja Digest, the arrest followed complaints from the Chairmen of Abaji and Bwari Area Councils, Abubakar Abdullahi and John Gabaya, respectively.
Disu explained that the meeting, chaired by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, also set up a committee to monitor the influx of suspicious individuals into the Territory and to profile teachers of almajiri schools to identify fake or unqualified ones. The committee will work closely with the six Area Council Chairmen to ensure proper oversight.
He added that the committee would collaborate with the FCT Department of Quality Assurance, the Social Development Secretariat, and almajiri schools to ensure compliance with approved standards and prevent a recurrence of incidents like the Muhammed Yusuf case, where unregulated schools became breeding grounds for extremism.
The committee comprises representatives from the Nigeria Police Force, FCT Department of Security Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigerian Navy, and the Department of State Services (DSS).
