The Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has been able to evacuate a total of 2,246 Nigerians from war-torn Sudan using 12 flights. Efforts are in place to engage more Nigerian carriers to join in airlifting stranded citizens in the country.
As part of its humanitarian gesture, NEMA has also dispatched assorted food items approved for the Nigerian Embassy in Sudan to cater to the stranded Nigerians awaiting airlift in Port Sudan back home. The food items, consisting of 100 bags of 10kg rice, 50 bags of 10kg beans, 10 cartons of seasoning, 50 cartons of spaghetti, and five bags of iodized salt, were airlifted to Port Sudan by Tarco Aviation, which brought 123 stranded Nigerians to Abuja.
It is important to note that the evacuation exercise is ongoing and efforts are being made to engage Nigerian airlines to strengthen airlift operations for willing Nigerians who have been profiled to be transported back home as a result of the unfortunate conflict in Sudan.
The government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens is commendable, and these measures will no doubt help to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the crisis.
